Class Room Observations - Ajay Vienna 5/6 and 5/8

Date/Time: May 5th  

Topic/Skill: Grammar (Past continuous and Simple Past)

Teacher Presentation: Handed out written assignment, students knew what to do from previous instruction

Classroom Management: Had a student read the assignment's introduction, had them work together (both using the tense verbally and in writing) Teacher floated around the class

Materials: Hand out

Student Participation: Called on students to share out their work, had the students work in groups

Feedback Provided: Error correction, one student used the proper tense in the improper way and the teacher made sure to say that the tense was correct but not contextually appropriate

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Keep the classroom relaxing and engaging, do partner/group work as much as possible, make sure to highlight improvements in student ability

Topic/Skill: Reading (Academic English)

Teacher Presentation: Projected the article on screen

Classroom Management: Went around the room having the students read the article

Materials: Academic Article

Student Participation: Went around the room having the students read the article

Feedback Provided: If a student struggled to understand a section, the teacher would break the comprehension by referring to the context and schema he already built prior in the class

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: For reading: context is king

Topic/Skill: Speaking (Short and Long Syllables)

Teacher Presentation: Had a powerpoint, which guided the class

Classroom Management: Broke the class in groups for the speaking portions, teacher floated around the classroom

Materials: Powerpoint

Student Participation: Called on students, had them do pair work

Feedback Provided: When students made errors, corrected until the student was clear. Floated around the classroom also correcting during group work

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Teaching pronunciation is hard, the way stress relates to meaning in English speech, the importance of group


Date/Time: May 5th  

Topic/Skill: Listening (Beginner Comprehension)

Teacher Presentation: Had students fill out critical thinking questions -> brief vocab lesson -> simple match word assignment

Classroom Management: Had the students work as a group on the questions 

Materials: Google Doc

Student Participation: Worked together, called on them for the match word assignment

Feedback Provided: Since they were beginners, most of the feedback was just getting the students in the right direction with their speaking, without concern for perfectly proper grammar

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: For teaching receptive skills, it is important to pick topics students already have background knowledge of 


Date/Time: May 8th  

Topic/Skill: Speaking (Word Stress, Intonation)

Teacher Presentation: Showed the words and proper stress patterns, the general rules -> had the native speakers present read aloud -> broke class into pair

Classroom Management: Teacher floated around the class. 

Materials: Powerpoint

Student Participation: Students worked in pairs.

Feedback Provided: Corrected stress and intonation for students, had them repeat until they got it

Lesson(s) on teaching you learned: Pairs work well for teaching speaking, modeling the proper speech is important
