Tutoring Session 06/23/26- (Anna & Fadia)

Date/Time: Tuesday, June 23rd, 4:30-5:30 Location: Zoom   Topic/Skill: Past Verb Tenses: Past perfect continuous, past continuous, and past perfect simple Feedback provided to the tutee: I presented my tutee with a review in the form of a brief PowerPoint of the 4 past tenses, focusing on the past perfect simple, past continuous, and past perfect continuous. While writing this review, I asked my tutee to explain the tenses to me and give examples to ensure she understood each one before completing an activity. As a way to test my tutee's understanding, we completed an activity in which I read sentences in the past tense to her, and she had to fill in the blank given an unconjugated verb. I completed the first two questions with her, then let her answer the rest (she told me the answers verbally while I typed), and waited until the end to check her answers. Once she was aware of the questions she got wrong, I broke down each error and ensured she understood why she either ...

Tutoring Session 05/27/26 (Anna & Piero)

Date/Time: Wednesday, May 27 th, 4:30-6:00pm Location: FSU Student Union   Topic/Skill: Non-Countable vs Countable Nouns & Quantifiers, Conversational Speaking Feedback provided to the tutee: I presented my tutee with a review in the form of a brief PowerPoint of countable and non-countable nouns, as well as the quantifiers that should be used with each type of noun. After reviewing this grammar topic, I informally quizzed my tutee by showing various nouns in countable and non-countable forms and having my tutee fill in the blank with the best quantifier (e.g., "how much water?" vs "how many water bottles?"). This allowed me to give more indirect feedback during the review process by correcting slight errors in my tutee's recollection of this grammar topic while giving more direct feedback when asking the "quiz-like" questions. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned: During this tutoring session, I learned the benefit of being ove...

Tutoring Session 05/20/26 (Anna & Piero)

Date/Time: Wednesday, May 20 th, 4:30-6:00pm Location: FSU Student Union   Topic/Skill: Conversational Speaking, Productive Language Skills Feedback provided to the tutee: I casually corrected my tutee’s grammar errors and incorrect word usage by repeating the sentences containing errors back, but in the correct linguistic form. We engaged in casual conversation and I was able to encourage more complex speech from my tutee by asking questions about his personal life, work, etc. This was effective at drawing out errors in my tutee's productive speaking skills as he was less inclined to resort to more "rehearsed" or learned responses. This way, there were more errors that I was able to correct which will likely be errors my tutee would make in a real-life situation. Much of the feedback I provided was calling attention to the necessity to distinguish when the best time is to use different verb tenses such as simple past vs present perfect. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or...

Tutoring Session 05/21/26 (Anna & Fadia)

Date/Time: Thursday, May 21 st, 2:00-3:15 pm Location: FSU Student Union   Topic/Skill: Quantifiers Feedback provided to the tutee: I offered examples of when to use quantifiers in different situations (e.g., how many water bottles vs. how much water) and corrected my tutee's errors directly, and I more casually corrected her errors during activities involving the use of quantifiers. Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  Using a PowerPoint or presentation of some sort is a very effective tool for engaging the tutee and ensuring that they are understanding the material, as well as ensuring that they have sufficient linguistic support and background knowledge while completing the activities.

Tutoring Session 05/12/26 (Anna & Fadia)

Date/Time: Tuesday, May 12 th , 2:00-3:15pm Location: FSU Student Union Topic/Skill: Casual Speaking, Productive Language Skills Feedback provided to the tutee: I, encouragingly and strategically, corrected my tutee’s grammar errors while we were having a casual, getting-to-know-you conversation.   Lesson(s) about tutoring and/or the tutee you learned:  ESL students are anxious to speak English even in situations where they know they are in a safe space. I learned that even if you have a plan for the session before going in, you should not focus too much on sticking strictly to it, but rather on adapting to your tutee's needs.
